Our Environment: Farms, Land Preservation, & Water Systems

Rensselaer County is home to an incredible array of public parks, preserves, family farms – forming the foundation of our county's identity and sense of place.

  • Close and clean up the Dewey Landfill and Superfund Site in Nassau immediately.

  • Reconnect Castleton to its riverfront.

  • Support rural farmland preservation, family farming, and expanding connections of farms within our local markets.

  • Encourage rural preservation by working with land preservation funds and open space funds to preserve space and rural character.

  • Create a Rensselaer County Conservation Fund to purchase additional parks and open space, and create a comprehensive Rensselaer County Conservation Plan working with stakeholders. See: https://www.renstrust.org/protect/county-conservation-plan

  • Promote clean water infrastructure improvement projects through working with state and local governments, and reduce flooding by prioritizing county stormwater enforcement.

  • Support county wetland protection efforts.

  • Continue efforts to identify and prevent contamination of poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) throughout Rensselaer County.

  • Develop Rensselaer County’s cultural history and work with necessary entities to accomplish that goal.
